Itoshii
For the opening of two Itoshii Streetfood & Sushi locations, Studio OAK was commissioned to develop and realise a new and distinctive interior concept. The venues, located in the “Fresh!” food market in the Mall of the Netherlands (Leidschendam) and in the Hoog Catharijne shopping centre (Utrecht), required a dynamic and recognisable design that perfectly reflects the energy of Japanese street food culture.

AN INTERIOR INSPIRED BY THE STREETS OF TOKYO
The core of the design is a translation of Japanese street culture and design. This is reflected in the materials, shapes, and visual elements used in the interior. The use of raw, urban features combined with warm wood tones creates a balance between modernity and authenticity.
A striking feature of the interior is the large visual on the back wall, which forms a direct link to Tokyo’s vibrant street scene. In addition, the ‘street signage’ on the walls and ceilings, combined with the characteristic wooden joints, reinforces the typical atmosphere of Japanese street food markets. This creates a lively, energetic setting where guests feel immersed in Japanese food culture.
ATMOSPHERE AND EXPERIENCE IN HARMONY
Itoshii stands for authentic street food in an accessible, contemporary setting. Studio OAK translated this into a unique interior where tradition and urban influences come together. The materials and colours were carefully selected to create a warm, inviting atmosphere without compromising the bold, industrial look of a modern street food hotspot.
STRENGTHENING BRAND IDENTITY
Through a smart layout and the use of subtle Japanese details, an environment is created that is both functional and visually appealing. The concept strengthens Itoshii’s brand identity and contributes to a dining experience that goes beyond just the food itself.
